Lying where the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay meet, Marin County is a busy intersection for wildlife of all types. The air, land and sea that we call home are also the habitat for an enormous array of species, but our human footprint often impedes their well-being. Fortunately, our area is home to three outstanding centers specializing in wildlife rehabilitation: WildCare, International Bird Rescue (IBR), and The Marine Mammal Center (TMMC). Our May 18, 2021, program featured the directors of these pivotal organizations who will discuss the challenges faced by the animals they specialize in protecting and preserving (video available here or via the Event Archives page).
Now in its 50th year, IBR inspires people to act toward balance with the natural world by rescuing waterbirds in crisis and giving second chances to critically threatened seabirds and other aquatic species through response, rehabilitation and research. Founded in 1975, TMMC leads the field in ocean conservation through marine mammal rescue, veterinary medicine, science, and education. WildCare is nearing its 70th year of delivering world-class medical care to upwards of 3,500 injured, ill and orphaned terrestrial mammals, songbirds and animals of all description each year in its open-admission wildlife hospital, while also delivering exceptional environmental education and advocating for protection of wildlife and our shared habitat.
